This beautiful Blue & White Linen "Romal" Handkerchief is our reproduction from the collection of the DAR Museum"Romal" or "rumal" handkerchiefs were originally a textile of India and were a popular accessory among all classes of individuals. This checked Blue & White Linen "Romal" Handkerchief is woven specifically to size with a border. The original is possibly of American origin and dated late 18th to early 19th century.

This type of handkerchief was found throughout the 18th century coming from India, as well as being mimicked by the English and others in linens and mixed cottons. You can find similar neck and pocket handkerchiefs in collections throughout the world. An example is this small 18th century pocket-handkerchief in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts - Boston, which appears to have an almost identical weave.
